Today is the time to be thankful, remember good times, and embrace those who enrich our lives. I’m thankful for a lot of things, but I’m most thankful for you my Rotary Family. I am truly grateful to my amazing Veterans and Patriots and all we do for each other and all those in our community. Happy Thanksgiving!
Yours in Rotary Service

130 Years for the
Pledge of Allegiance
Since October 21st, 1892, students across America have started their day reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. 47 states have laws requiring public schools to include the Pledge daily. The original purpose was to bring the United States together after the Civil War, which had caused a devastating divide in America. The Pledge was written in 1885 by Union Army officer George Thatcher Balch with the purpose of healing the nation.
He thought that having children recite the pledge would allow them to grow up with a shared sense of loyalty to their country and focus more on being united as Americans rather than focus on differences. In 1892 Francis Bellamy made a new version that became more popular, and fifty years later, Congress made this version the official Pledge of the United States. They also made a rule that people should place their right hands over their hearts when reciting the pledge. In 1954 the words “under God” were added back to the Pledge, causing controversy, but it has stayed the same since then and millions of Americans continue reciting the promise of unity today.
