Where Are the Fighting Giraffes?
Aug 11, 2026 11:30 AM
We're excited to welcome author David Winder, whose unique presentation explores the fascinating, humorous, and often surprising world of school mascots and nicknames. After researching thousands of high school and college mascots across the country, David turned his passion for unusual trivia into the books Where Are the Fighting Giraffes? and Where Are the Fighting Giraffes: College Edition. More than just a look at mascots, David's presentation highlights the traditions, identities, and community pride that unite people around shared experiences. Veterans especially understand the importance of camaraderie, esprit de corps, and the lasting connections formed through service and belonging. From Wildcats and Aggies to Hippos and Corn Jerkers, David's stories offer a fun and engaging look at the organizations and communities that shape our identities. This is a great meeting to invite friends, family members, educators, sports fans, fellow veterans, and anyone who enjoys Texas history, college traditions, and great storytelling. |
